After some major problems in the past, Chinese makers of drywall are now leading to big problems for contractors and home owners across the United States. Problems have risen up that will mean houses that are tainted with the Chinese drywall must be gutted and cleared out says the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumers who have purchased this type of drywall have to remove it, but most of those who got a hold of this particular type got it as a way of replacing their homes after the devastating hurricanes that struck the Gulf states of Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Florida. These states had a housing boom after these disasters due to the number of homes that were leveled during the hurricanes. The problem with the drywall from China is that it has been leading to corrosion of wires that go not only to home electrical outlets but also to alarm systems, sprinklers, circuit breakers and carbon monoxide alarms. The Chinese product actually turned out to emit product that is dangerous because it gets into the air conditioning system and since over 100 times the level of hydrogen sulfide is contained in the drywall, the effects can be harmful to consumers’ health.
The gas from the hydrogen sulfide, combined with the formaldehyde blends together with the wallboard to to create a constant leak of very irritating fumes which have been leading to health issues for the families in the ear, nose and throat areas. Since the homes will need to be gutted of all the drywall in order to be made safe again, the process could get quite expensive for the consumers and is a definite problem for home owners.
